If you want to gift something truly thoughtful, instead of grabbing something off an impersonal wishlist, here are some tips to consider….
Yep! It is that time of year for gifting the ones we love. And who doesn’t like quality, original art, both beautiful and one-of-a-kind?

First, pay attention!
Think about how your art gift will be displayed. What sort of space might be available for this piece? What are this person’s preferred colors and medium? Do they show desire for specific styles? Consider the taste of the individual for whom the gift will be created. Spend a little time in their home, or watching what they wear, or how they present their office, or choice of a vehicle. Search out what images they post online. This indicates one’s preferences and the sorts of art they might appreciate. Do not presume they share your tastes, unless of course they actually do.
Secondly, buy from local artists.
Buying from local artists is a huge win for everyone. Local arts and co-op galleries can show you a lot of great options, often for a reasonable price. Galleries also provide patrons with contacts for special requests, so you can commission an artist to create something more specific to one’s needs. Some artists are swift and can create within days, and others take months. Ask up front if they tend to stick to a schedule. Your gift could be in the form of a promissory note in a card for an extended delivery date. Online artists are another option, and a simple viewing of their social media images, or artists’ websites will tell you a story of their creations. Just remember, more distanced artists may need to charge a bit extra for shipping, and the risks are expanded with lesser community connections. Be sure to read reviews and establish a sensible trust with your artist.

Third, take a peek at the price tags.
Imagine something within your budget; even the smallest of gifts is still, indeed, a gift. Do not focus on whether or not it is good enough. Focus on the fact that you selected something of personal, meaningful value. A 12×12″ painting says I am thinking of you, but I am not driven by my ego. A small statue, or a potter’s dish can become a keepsake for life, since its size does not require inconvenient storage or display. Many artists, like me, will charge only a small percentage up front, and assure your final approval before a final payment.
Finally, how does this reflect upon your relationship with the beneficiary?
Does this piece represent something about this person, or your relationship to them? Take time to decide what you wish to say with this gift. Original art is a statement. Be sure your intention is clear.
