April 11. Fire đźś‚: Passion and Drive

Going Home.
When all of our family elders passed away; the land we collectively owned had evolved. No longer did our great-grandparents determine how it would be maintained. It became parceled out to younger generations, and much of it was sold off to strangers. I grieved the loss of our river access, the trout ponds, the tennis courts, the freedom to wander without territorial gates. I told my father, who had long ago divorced my mother’s family, that I wanted to perhaps reside there before it was too late. He said, “You can go back there, but be prepared, it will never be what it once was.”

“Remember the movie Stranger than Fiction? The main character Harold Crick does the same things in exactly same time for years. He leads a completely dull, extremely predictable, and uninteresting life. That is how your life would be without changes” (Alexander, 2023).

Do we accept that time will bring change? Looking back is not wrong. However, living in the present and being at peace requires the willingness to let go of what used to be. Change is natural; it brings growth and that keeps us most alive. Nothing on this earth is forever. The truth is that we do not need things to remain the same, but we must believe that. What we carry internally will be enough, and a new experience will be ours to embrace. Treasure the memory, but also, treasure change too.
