Technology Dependence

Sometimes, I reach for my phone. I see that no one has texted. Then I go to my email. No new emails came in. I turn to social media. I begin scrolling through the surface memes, the illusions of ideal life, and the shocking news of the day. I slowly realize there is nothing in this hand-sized device that will satisfy me. There is nothing here to make me less lonely, less bored, or less hungry. At least not right now, there isn’t. There is nothing here for me. Now, I just have to get myself to set this device down, to walk away.

Increasing reliance on technology for everyday tasks can lead to a loss of essential skills or the erosion of critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. Overdependence on automation can diminish human competence in specific domains”(Ray, 2023).

Inspired Action

Loosen up your constant use of technology in small ways, just to reinforce your natural living. Sleep until you naturally awaken on the days you can. Take a walk without bringing your phone. Take a drive without the radio and roll the windows down. Do not watch television or scan social media for an entire day. Harken back to your natural state. Unplug. It will be okay.
